Min-Max-Cities Group

What is the future for cities? Are they expanding at an ever-increasing rate? Or shrinking into oblivion? Are cities suffering from dynamic pace of change? Or suffocating in its absence? Should growth be curtailed because it is environmentally destructive? Or welcomed as the means of expanding civilisation? Are cities sprawling, bland and anonymous? Or centres of diversity, beauty and innovation?

These questions are important because the way we view the future determines how we organise ourselves now.  Research agendas, design priorities, and the evolving disciplines of architecture, urbanism and planning will all be shaped by the answers given.

The min-max- cities group has been set up to explore the questions outlined above, and more besides.  This website brings together many perspectives on the urban future contained within research, writing, policy and commentary.  Out starting point is that nothing should be placed out of bounds, and we deliberately aim to place different viewpoints within the same space. By threading contrasting views together, the hope is we gain a richer understanding and the ability to think afresh about the future.

The Group is based at the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies within the Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge.
